That's interesting. I have yet to have family members find me on Facebook but I have sometimes consciously wondered if I want to add somebody. There's actually a Linked In request from a certain classmate from Michigan that I still haven't approved because I know I have no professional respect for that person.

There's a site for India, called Orkut.com were I had met a bunch of my high school friends and where my Best Friend and I have conversations in our "Scrapbooks," a similar concept to the Wall in Facebook. However, a cousin found me on Orkut, read my conversation with my best friend and found out about my surgery which my parents hadn't really shared with family there yet.

I guess I am not that avid a watcher of Seinfeld, or I just don't remember stuff but Orkut is where my worlds collided.

That's right - I totally forgot about the "open networkers" on Facebook. I always reject their friend requests and I usually don't add them on LinkedIn. I don't really want to expose all of my contacts to some random person I've never met.

Oh and in the context of social networks, friending is a totally legit verb ;)

I've got people trying to network with me on Facebook. I just don't know what to do about that. I've never even MET you before, but we are in the same profession... can't you just go to LinkedIn?

It's also kind of weird being in a college environment. I made a resolution that I wasn't going to friend any of our study abroad students or the student workers in our office, although I have friended them after graduation, so that we can keep in touch with them as they go off into their lives. Then one friended me this week. Well, I suppose it would be rude to refuse, so my thought was "Well, if you don't mind ME seeing what you're doing, I guess I don't mind YOU seeing what I'm doing."

Great post Noor. I know we've talked about this subject before (referring to blogs rather than facebook) but I still find the whole thing fascinating. The Seinfeld reference is perfect.
