WTF!!! That wasn’t an ending!! You can’t end a series like that!! A black screen?!? What happened? Does Meadow get whacked? Or does the entire family get whacked? Or does Meadow escape and the rest get whacked? The “Don’t Stop Believing” at the end is leading me to think that nothing happened and they’ll just go on with their lives. Tony is going to get charged, Meadow will grow up to defend people like Tony, Carm will continue restoring her houses, AJ will float through one job to another.
Or maybe they just want enough creative freedom to make a spin-off series or a movie.
Any thoughts?

Even though it was really frustrating, I thought it was an excellent end to the series. I love how it can be read multiple ways. So many of the signs leading up to the final scene suggest different endings: Paulie alone in front of Satriale’s (loved the reference to the first episode), AJ & Meadow starting their own lives, the frequent references to Tony’s dying business family (an empty Bing, a dying Sil, pending indictments, etc.).
I think I’m going to watch the very first episode tonight.

Oh, and David Chase hates us, this much is certain.

Yes, David Chase does hate us. :)
I finally figured it out on the treadmill this morning. Nothing happens (”it goes on and on”) in the diner but we get a sense of how Tony feels at every moment. He’s worried about his family and paranoid about who might try to whack him (or the feds watching him).
Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

Oh, and after the sheer frustration, it was a brilliant ending.

Yes! I didn’t pick up on the lyrics in the song (it’s hard to get past the Journey-ness of it, plus I was all tense and waiting for the blood to fly), but you’re definitely onto something there.

I would have ended it with the Russian going into the diner and saying to Tony “I am Keyser Soze! And all of you are really ghosts plus Adriana’s head is in the box, and the entire series was just a dream!”
