I’m moving out and driving home next Wednesday. Along with packing up my entire apartment and saying bye to the fraction of my social network that is actually still in Ann Arbor, I have two very important decisions to ponder: which route should I take and what should I play along the way? Instead of pondering these decisions alone, I figured I’d ask the two people that read my blog to help me decide:
Which route should I take?
Route A: 94 to 80 to 55
Pros:
- I’ve driven it a few times before.
- It is the shortest in terms of distance.
- I’m only in Indiana for about an hour.
Cons:
- I’ve driven it a few times before.
- After leaving Michigan, it gets pretty boring. Corn. More corn. Even more corn.
- I’ll go through Chicago, which means Chicagoland traffic + Chicagoland drivers.
- There is construction and a detour along 80.
- I’ll have to pay tolls along 80.
Route B: 94 to 69 to 465 to 70
Pros:
- It’s a new route.
- No tolls.
- No Chicagoland drivers, traffic, or construction.
- I’ll go through Indianapolis, which I’ve never been to.
Cons:
- It’s a new route.
- I’ll be in Indiana for a long time.
- It is about ten miles longer.
What should I play along the way?
Car songs? Driving songs? Songs about leaving and saying good bye? Songs about new beginnings?

1) The long one.
2) Polka.
1. I have an alternate route – drive across michigan and then turn your car into an aquatic car and drive across Lake Michigan into Wisconsin and then take a straight diagonal through Wisconsin, Illinois, and then into Missouri.
2. Here are some songs you might consider:
Life is a Highway – Time Conchrane
The Power of Goodbye – Madonna
I am the Highway – Audioslave
Goodbye to You – Michelle Branch
Big Yellow Taxi – Joni Mitchell
The End – The Doors
and of course,
Cop Killer – Ice T
1. Route 2, always do the new, and what’s 10 miles and Indiana if you can avoid lookign at that much corn?
2. I have that 80s songs about broken wings running through my head right now and cannot think of anything else.
I would say, take the road less taken!!! :)
And essential soundtrack for a roadtrip has to include “Someday we’ll know” by The New Radicals. There’s a line in the song that goes “… 90 miles outside Chicago/ can’t stop driving I don’t know why …” Seems perfect for your trip Noor :)
I vote Indiana, too. The corn is a killer. Maybe they have another variety in Indiana? You’ll miss my (brief) return to A2 by a day, which sucks. Good luck :)
Oh, and listen to Indian music – I hear that it is “verrry, verry ni-ice.”
I didn’t know that you are leaving A2…\>0
Avoid Chicago like the plague, the construction there is killer. My sister spent two hours getting through on 80/94 last week. Indiana’s a bore but at least you’ll be moving.
Safe travels!
1) I vote for B: make your exit much of an adventure as was the adventure itself! Buy some corn while you’re at it as a souvenire. :D
2) You know you’re gonna listen to Sarah all the way. :P
