Ibn Batuta Mall is a brand new mall that resembles various parts of the world under one roof. Ibn Batuta was an Arab medieval explorer who traveled to various parts of the world.
I should note that as a child, I used to always imagine Ibn Batuta as a big rubber duck (Batuta kind of sounds like butah, which means duck in Arabic). When my brother was telling me about the mall, he mentioned that they have an Ibn Batuta mascot that my youngest niece is terrified of. All I could think of is some guy in a big duck suit. It’s funny how stupid childhood thoughts like that still stick with me until today.

Thats funny because I played him in a school play about Sultan Mohammed Bin Tughlaq… and until then, I had always associated him with a potato .. as Batata in Hindi means potato. And my schoolmates called me potato for the rest of the year because of that.

Batata also means potato in Arabic but I never made the connection between Ibn Batuta and potatoes. For some reason, the duck association is what resonates the most with me.
I think there may have been a duck-like character in Arabic cartoons who was called batuta, though, so maybe that’s where I got it from?
